The Connecting Cambridgeshire Team have confirmed that other suppliers than BT are now able to offer fibre broadband packages to those houses and businesses served from the Babraham junction box, near Jonas.
It seems, however, that Talk Talk have made a commercial decision not to provide the service to their customers in the village. We understand that fibre broadband is available through BT, EE, John Lewis broadband, Plusnet and possibly Sky and others.
The PC would like anyone who either can or cannot be connected with their current provider who is not on the list above to let us know so we can advise others.
BT inform us that the installation problems for some village numbers has now been sorted. They are taking orders for broadband services again now.
The PC understand, from bitter personal experience, that the planned roll out of superfast broadband in the village is experiencing problems. Some lucky folk have managed to get connected, some not.
BT OpenReach are currently estimating the problems with the cabinet, near Jonas, will be fixed in September.
We hope they manage it. More news as we have it.
We are sure you will have heard that Superfast Broadband has recently been made available in Babraham. The Connecting Cambridgeshire website has more information, specifically about how to actually get it. The advice it gives is sensible and timely – please follow this link. The essence of their advice is to check your current contract with your Internet Service Provider, and if needing to change then assess a whole series of factors before deciding on which provider to switch to.
Whilst the speeds we will now be able to enjoy maybe not the same as in cities at least it is a major improvement on what we have endured for years. The County Council has worked hard and diligently to roll out faster broadband across the rural parts of the county, a job that is ongoing.
The PC can offer general advice if you have any difficulties or queries but cannot deal with specific problems relating to your service provider contracts.
You may have noticed a new phone cabinet near Jonas. This is to bring a fibre optic cable to the village in advance of upgrading the Sawston exchange. When the work is completed our broadband speeds will improve dramatically. The work has made a mess, which will be rectified, but will be worth it in the long run. No date has been announced but it should up and running later this year.
